Unpack/Repack .vpk Files

How to unpack/repack with the Titanfall 2 VPK Tool

PreviousConverting to .bikNextHow RandomInt Works

Last updated 2 years ago

First thing's first, download the Titanfall VPK Tool here:

If you wish to repack using RSPNVPK, download it here:

Unpack (Titanfall VPK Tool)

Open up the tool, then click the Open button.

Find englishclient_mp_common.bsp.pak000_dir.vpk. (or a different directory vpk, if specified)

Click Extract All.

Find somewhere to dump all the files in. (you should make a new folder specifically to hold these files)

Enjoy! If the lower box in the tool has any error popups, you did something wrong. It's likely because you tried unpacking a vpk that isn't in the vpk folder. It should look like the image below.

Do I repack with VPK Tool or RSPNVPK?

The Titanfall VPK Tool has a bug where, upon repacking and installing your new vpks, the bloom effects in-game become noticeably stronger. This can bother some people, so if you wish to avoid it, it is recommended to use RSPNVPK instead.

Also, with the Titanfall VPK Tool, you have to repack the entire vpk, keeping all original files inside the folder. With RSPNVPK, you only need to keep the files you've modified inside of the folder.

You CANNOT freely switch between the two tools whenever you want. For example, if you have an edited client_mp_common.bsp.pak000_000.vpk, you cannot have an edited client_mp_common.bsp.pak000_228.vpk. Both method's directories likely conflict as well.

If you decide to switch to RSPNVPK, you need to replace your pak000_000.vpk with a default one. If you decide to switch to Titanfall VPK Tool, you need to delete your pak000_228.vpk.

Repack (Titanfall VPK Tool)

Click the Repack VPK button.

Click Browse and find the folder you want to turn into a vpk. Then, Browse for the location the vpk will be put in. Then, click Build VPK.

Assuming you're replacing englishclient_mp_common.bsp.pak000_dir.vpk, name the two output files accordingly: pak000_000.vpk > client_mp_common.bsp.pak000_000.vpk pak000_dir.vpk > englishclient_mp_common.bsp.pak000_dir.vpk

Copy these 2 files into your game's vpk folder, and your mods should now be installed.

Enjoy!

Repack (RSPNVPK)

NOTE: Unlike with the Titanfall VPK Tool, this actually gives you a brand new vpk along with the directory, that does not replace previously existing ones (it ends in 228.vpk instead of 000.vpk). Because of this, make sure your 000.vpk is NOT modded, as this can cause issues.

Because this new vpk you're creating is not the 000.vpk, you do not need to have all of the original files still in your custom mod folder. The folder only needs to contain files you have changed. Keep in mind that these still have to retain the same filepath as before.

After unpacking the tool, you'll have a folder like this:

You'll need to put the actual directory vpk you plan on modding in here, in most cases this is the mp_common one. Copy it from your game's vpk folder and put it in here:

After you're ready to repack your modded vpk, you're going to need to move or copy its folder into here. If you haven't already, rename it so that it has the same name as the directory vpk you just copied in here:

Next, select both the directory folder and the directory vpk using ctrl+click, and drag them onto RSPNVPK.exe:

A command prompt will then appear, load up, and notify you that backups will not be made. Press enter to continue once you're ready, and the program will start to run.

Once that's done, you'll have an updated directory and a new vpk called: client_mp_common.bsp.pak000_228.vpk

Copy both the directory vpk and the new 228 vpk and put them into your game's vpk folder, and your mods should now be installed.

Enjoy!
